Carnival!

Carnival is a festival of colors and costumes, inaugurating the arrival of Lent.
Spaniards love any reason to party, and everyone dresses up in costumes, just like Halloween.

At our schools, all the young students brought elaborate costumes to wear for afternoon parade-parties. Each class takes turns showing off their duds (observe Peter Pan and Batman glad-handing the crowd as they pass by) followed by dancing, led by the teachers.

A few close-ups of some little buddies!

(On the left) Adriana, the beautiful princess! (On the right) Javi, aka Peter Pan, ready to face Hook with his foam sword!

(On the left) Olivia the zebra and Prince Sergio! (On the right) Angel, the astronaut! (this picture perfectly showcases his "mousy" demeanor!)

There were all kinds of events to celebrate carnival. We went to an extravagant parade that night...giant puppets, traditional music and dancers from all over the world, fire-breathing machines, and dozens of truly fantastical, even horrific, dungeon-and-dragonesque creatures. It was the best costume parade we've ever been to! (We apologize beforehand for the limitations of our point-and-shoot crapamera. Wah.)
